“Where Do We Go From Here?” Direction for Our Future

The African Forum on Religion and Government (AFReG) held a webinar series titled, Africans Rising Together: African Identity, Dignity, and Justice in the 21st Century.

The first webinar’s focus was “Hearing from the Young Voices” which featured video vignettes reflecting perspectives and feelings on the questions of race and racial injustices. These perspectives were from young people from the continent of Africa as well as from the Diaspora.  We explored ways communities can respond more faithfully to God and emerge from our current social challenges. The young voices were also heard during a panel discussion. Panelists included Tim Swain, Wongel Abate, Se’era Ricks, and Prof. Delanyo Adadevoh (AFReG) Chairman. The President of AFReG, Bishop Ngwiza Mnkandla moderated.

The second webinar focused on “Realities of our Past” and sought to provide the historical context on the transatlantic slave trade and its legacies, as well as the realities following emancipation. It aimed at visiting the past, exploring the experiences of a marginalized people created in God’s image for centuries through systemic injustices with a view of learning from it so we can be more faithful to God in impacting the present toward a better God-given future. The webinar moderators were AFReG Board members Dr. Daryl Jones (Col, ret), and Martha Jones (LtCol, ret).  Panelists included Dr. Patricia Newton, Dr. Alexander Chisango and Rev. Dr. Setri Nyomi (AFReG Board member).

The third webinar “Where Are We Now?” brought together Africans and Africans from the Diaspora to discuss the present situation.  Some of the discussion areas included the forces or factors most shaping the idea of African identity today. We also discussed if the Church has found its voice to help address the deeply important social issue of reconciliation. Panelists included Dr. Kenneth Ngwa, Dr. Julian Dangerfield, Dr. Keisha Ross, and Bishop Dr. Joshua Banda (AFReG Board member).  The webinar moderators were AFReG Board members Dr. Daryl Jones (Col, ret), and Martha Jones (LtCol, ret).

Our final webinar of the series is “Where Do We Go From Here?” on September 16th at 9:00 AM EST or 4:00 PM East African Time. We’ll explore the greatest opportunities we have for advancing a truly positive African narrative in the future as well as learning from the past to set a trajectory for a unified Africa for the future. Scheduled panelists include Her Excellency Ambassador Dr. Arikana Chihombori Quao; Dr. Emily Obwaka (AFReG Board member); Bishop Ngwiza Mnkandla (AFReG President); and Mr. B. J.
