Growing Spiritually

Beginning With God

Everyone knows that faith plays a significant role in our spiritual growth , but practically speaking it either occupies too much or too little of our understanding. If our conception of spiritual growth is nothing more than self-effort, we will not experience life transformation.

But if every spiritual pothole is paved with “just trust God,” we will also miss out on true spiritual growth. This is not to detract from the centrality of faith in becoming more like Christ, only to understand its role, so we can better coach those whom we disciple.

When you became a Christian, Christ indwelled you through the person of the Holy Spirit. I know neither the how nor the where, but I do know that the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence carries with it the assurance of our salvation.

Core Christian Belief

The doctrine of the Trinity is foundational to the Christian faith. It is crucial for properly understanding what God is like, how He relates to us, and how we should relate to Him.

Heaven is one of those areas where people have formed all sorts of conclusions, assumptions. But they are not at all what God says is true. For example, many people assume that one goes to heaven based on living a good life. And if one wanted to be more certain (beyond living a good life) some think it would be important to be religious, showing your devotion to God. Whether it’s living a good life or being religious, people conclude that heaven is a reward for their efforts.

Like a funeral, heaven and hell can be nothing more than the pleasant or not-so pleasant afterthoughts of our Christian life. But they were intended to be the lifeblood that animates it, much as they do the Scriptures. For even when not explicitly referred to, these two realities lie just beneath the words of every page of Scripture.

Growing Your Relationship With God

Is God new to you? Are you unsure about your next steps? Growing Your Relationship With God will connect you with resources and articles to help you on the next step of your spiritual journey.

When I was a teenager, I wanted to be happy. I wanted my life to have meaning. I became hounded by three basic questions: Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going? I started searching for answers.

Where I was brought up, everyone seemed to be into religion, so I thought I might find my answers in being religious. I got into church 150 percent. I went every time the doors opened – morning, afternoon, or evening. But I must have picked the wrong church, because I felt worse inside it than I did outside. From my upbringing on a farm in Michigan I inherited a rural practicality that says when something doesn’t work, get rid of it. So I chucked religion.
