Potential Pitfalls of a Leader

It is amazing what God can do through the life of one Christian.

Whether you see it or not, in all seriousness, there could be hundreds or thousands of students’ lives changed on this campus because of your leadership.

Being a leader, however, can have its dangers.

There is a temptation, most leaders have — self-reliance.

Leaders are usually capable. They have good ideas. They like to take action. They are results-oriented.

If you are a leader, you might have to constantly remind yourself to trust him. You might have to remind yourself that when you have a need, to ask him.

Your job is to look to him to guide and leave the results with him.

If you will…it is amazing what God accomplishes. If you rely on yourself, you are likely to get frustrated, burdened, critical of others, and discouraged.

Perhaps the smartest thing you can do is keep Scripture in front of you that reminds you that your trust is in God, not in yourself.

When you are trusting God (genuinely) there is an energy that he gives. The weight of responsibility is on him. The problems are given to him in prayer. He produces the results, not us. We can work with joy when we’re trusting him.

Isaiah 30 might be helpful. Here are a few excerpts…

“In returning and rest you shall be saved;
in quietness and in trust shall be your strength…
the Lord waits to be gracious to you
and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you…
blessed are all those who wait for him…

He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry. And your eyes shall see your Teacher. And your ears shall hear a word behind you saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it.’ When you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.”

Rest. Be Quiet. Trust. Listen.

You can be bold in your actions and work hard, but you are not looking to yourself, but to God….for guidance, provision, ideas, people, results. Keep standing on God’s ability, God’s leading. You could have the most exciting year ahead of you if you’ll remember to rest in Him.
